Fall 2013: Letter from Mother Mary Christina

Dear Friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker:

Everyone will experience some type of suffering or illness during his or her life. Some may experience a short-term sickness, like the seasonal flu.  Others are asked by God to carry their suffering for a long period of time even perhaps throughout their entire lives.

During Our Lord’s time on earth, large numbers of the sick came to Him for healing. The Gospel records numerous examples of Jesus’ solicitude for the sick. Recall the Centurion who approached Jesus to ask for the healing of his servant; the Syro-Phoenician woman who begged that Jesus cure her daughter; the healing of St. Peter’s mother-in-law.  Jesus healed lepers, cured the blind, gave hearing to the deaf, cured the paralytic.  He showed compassion for those who were suffering from a physical illness and those who were suffering in other ways.

When a family member or a friend is sick, or when we are suffering ourselves, our first instinct is to turn to prayer.  The time of sickness is a special moment of growth in the spiritual life, whether we are asking for healing, for strength during the illness or for the grace to accept God’s will.   It is a time for us to grow in humility by realizing that there are some things that we cannot fix on our own. May God bless you now and always. Be assured of our prayers

Mother Mary Christina, SJW
