Article by Sr. Cecilia, SJW
“Let Him who was fastened to the cross be securely fastened to your hearts.” These words of St. Augustine of Hippo in his letter to the consecrated virgins of his day are my favorite summation of religious life. In a society that is largely focused on productivity, it often happens that Sisters are more recognized for what they do than who they are. It is true that women religious contribute much to the Church by their unflagging service in the realms of education, healthcare, and social work. However, these works of charity are secondary when it comes to the purpose of religious life. Canon Law states, “The first and principal duty of all religious is to be the contemplation of things divine and constant union with God in prayer.” (Can. 663) Consecrated women religious live out this “principal duty” in the vowed commitment to live the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience.
When I first came to religious life, I knew very little about the true depth and richness of the vows. My growth in understanding has not only shown me the beauty and mystery of consecration, but also how much more there is for me to learn. Making my first profession is not the end of my formation; it is the real beginning! I can hardly believe that this moment has finally arrived. I can only pray for the grace to continue to walk the path Our Lord has set me upon. I ask you to pray for me as well, that I may be faithful to the unfathomable gift that He has given me. It is a gift that will take me a lifetime to unwrap.
Sr. Cecilia made her first profession of temporary vows on May 1st. In our community, temporary vows are renewed annually for a period of 3-5 years. At the end of this time, the Sister makes her perpetual profession of vows, which is the final commitment to live religious life.
